A business card is your secret weapon if you’re using it properly.
Many people hand out their business cards to everyone they come into contact with whether the person wants the card or not. Think of your business card as another marketing tool, use it correctly and you’ll see your list of contacts and referrals grow.

Here are a few tips on how to hand out your business card in a professional manner.

1.Networking: This is an important part of getting to know people; when you meet someone at an event or a business meeting, strike up a conversation. Always ask for their business card first. Most people will be happy that you asked and it will be natural for them to ask for your card in return.
However, if they don’t ask, don’t offer your card. You never want to be too forward. When the person hands you their business card, look it over and ask genuine questions about their company.
Look over the card to make sure all the company contact information is there: phone number, email, website, etc. If something is missing be sure to ask for it so you can add it to the business card.

2.Your Card: If and when someone asks for your card politely hand them one and be ready to answer any questions they might have about your business.
Don’t ever try to sell anything when you first meet someone, only if they tell you they’d like to use your services or purchase what you’re selling. There is no need to sell someone when you first meet, at this point you just want to make a new contact.

3.Contact: Don’t wait more than 48 hours to send your new contact a handwritten note. Inside the card write a short note to tell them you appreciated having made their acquaintance. Personalize the note be adding a certain part of your conversation. It is important to place your business card inside the thank you note, then hand address the envelope with the address on their business card.
A handwritten note is much more effective and kind than an email. This is a great first step to building a professional relationship.

4.Organizing: When you receive a new business card make sure to file it in an organized folder for easy, quick reference. If you don’t hear back from your new contact after sending a note, ask if you can add them to your email list. Ask permission, not only is it the right thing to do, you never want to be accused of spamming. Then only send emails that are short and informative.

Next time you come into contact with someone use your business card as your company’s secret weapon. Now you know how to properly hand out your business card and start building your contact list.
